Richard Hall, an employee of Floyd County Schools, has been selected as the 2010 National School Transportation Association (NSTA) first-place winner in the School Bus Driver International Safety Competition held in St. Louis. Each year, NSTA hosts the School Bus Driver International Safety Competition. Hall also won first-place in the district, region, and state KAPT School Bus Driver Roadeo Competitions in the Small Bus Category. He has served as a bus driver for 25 years and drives in the Betsy Layne area.
The meeting, held at Allen Central High School, began with the acknowledgment of students who have achieved perfect attendance. Adams Middle School students Jordan Marcum, Bradley Ousley and Zachary Bailey, along with South Floyd Middle School student Joshua Bates, all received a certificate and a $100 savings bond. Two high school students, Chandra Hicks, from Allen Central, and Charles Lewis, of Betsy Layne, were also honored for perfect attendance.
Along with the students, six of the school district’s bus drivers were honored for their performances in the KAPT School Bus Roadeo. Those honored were Richard Hall, Edward Prater, Matthew Howard, Dallas Conn, Anthony Bolden and Victory Harper. Richard Hall was also honored for his first-place finish in the state and international competition for the small bus category.
According to information provided by the board, “The event began with a written test, then contestants actually got behind the wheel of a bus to put their driving skills to the test, competing in one of three categories, conventional, transit, or small bus. Drivers had the opportunity to demonstrate their professionalism, skill, and dedication to pupil transportation.”
Also at the meeting, the board voted to approve an agreement between Big Sandy Community and Technical College and the board for a transitional course program for students, a revision of graduation requirements, a limited contract for services with Highlands Regional Medical Center, an out-of-state trip for the Prestonsburg High School Cheerleaders to Myrtle Beach from July 30 until Aug. 4, an agreement between the Floyd County Health Department and Floyd County Schools for a registered nurse, a contract with Home Health Care Services of Pikeville to place trained, experienced health care professionals in the district for the upcoming school year, five temporary special needs para-educator positions, a memorandum of understating with Operation UNITE, a trip to Florida for the Stumbo Elementary Archer Team to compete in the NASP World Archery Tournament in October.
