He was born February 2, 1922, in Hi Hat, the son of the late Sill and Betty Howell Newman. He was a retired coal miner, and a U.S. Army, World II veteran. He was a member of the UMWA Wheelwright Local, and a lifetime member of Chapter 128 DAV, in Garrett.
Survivors include three sons: Cecil Ray Newman, Roy Douglas Newman, and Troy Lee Newman, all of River Rouge, Michigan; four daughters: Freda Mae Burke of Hi Hat; Betty Ann Johnson of Taylor, Michigan; Tammy Lynn Elliott of Abilene, Texas; and Lois Newman of Hi Hat; 12 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers: Ambers, Hent, Green, and Charlie Newman; and three sisters: Martha Newman, Osey Crawford, and Maudie Crawford.
Funeral services for Orby Newman were conducted Tuesday, January 26, at 1 p.m., in the Little Nancy Regular Baptist Church, in Hi Hat, with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the James E. Newman Cemetery, in Hi Hat, with the Hall Funeral Home caring for those arrangements.
