Floyd County saw its first hometown Republican file to run in the May primary this week, ensuring that at least one local race will not be unopposed in November.

Martin “MJ” Meade, of Stanville, filed his paperwork to run for District 4 magistrate in Prestonsburg this week. That race currently has two Democrats who have already filed, incumbent Ronnie Akers and challenger Dean Hall.

Also, two more Democratic candidates filed to run in the District 3 magistrate race, bringing the total number of candidates for that seat to seven individuals. The two new candidates for the District 3 race for magistrate are James “Bimbo” Collins, of Printer, and Basel Moore, of McDowell.

By far, more hopefuls have tossed their hats in the ring for a place on the fiscal court as magistrates than any other local races. In addition to those filing in District 3 and 4, another six names will be on the ballot for District 1 and four more in District 2.

Floyd County Attorney Keith Bartley also filed to run for re-election this past week. Bartley has seen no challengers file to run against him yet.

The deadline to file is Jan. 26 at 4 p.m.
