Immigration should have limits

The well-written opinion that Americans should welcome immigrants is both correct and wrong. We have always welcomed immigrants, and Congress has laid out the number we would accept. We have allowed special immigration status for those that are educated or who have special skills. Many argue, and I would agree, that these limits are too low and that there are manymore that should be considered or accepted that bring education and excellence to our country.

We proclaimed in 1776 that all men are created equal. But we have been so successful that people want to come here from all over the world. Not just a few coming into the melting pot and blending in, but an overwhelming number.

While many have filed applications to come here and gone through the necessary paperwork, they have sat and waited patiently for years to comply with our laws to have permission to come. Many who were fine people were turned down or rejected for permission to immigrate to the United States.

Outside of all the immigrants we have allowed to come to our country, and certainly Congress could adjust these numbers, there are millions (and nobody knows how many) that have come illegally. Some estimates are 11 million; maybe there are 50 million. So many have come illegally, it is now so overwhelming that it has the effect of changing American culture. Americans in border states are are beginning to feel as if they’re living in a Spanish-speaking country. So, the real question should not be whether America will accept immigrants, but how many. Many of those who have come here illegally are fine peopel that work hard. Some are drug dealers, and many would have been rejected if they had applied for legal immigration.

It seems to me the question should be, “Should everyone in the world be able to come here, or can we set limits?” Do we wish to preserve the spirit and culture that made America what it is? Who decides, we, the people, or those that have chosen to come here illegally? For those who have applied for immigration, filled out the paperwork, paid the fees and are waiting their turn, it seems grossly unfair to move them to the back of the line.

Just another way of looking at the same issue.
