LEXINGTON - The state volleyball tournament will be extended later in the year. Beginning in the 2013-14 schoolyear, the Kentucky high school state volleyball tournament championship match will be conducted on Sunday afternoon following action taken by the KHSAA Board of Control in April. After review of the Sunday play for the Boys’ State Basketball Tournament, the Board approved the move. Previously, the State Quarterfinals, State Semi-finals and the State Championship were staged all on Saturday. Following is the tentative schedule for the 2013 State Volleyball Tournament slated for Nov. 8-10 at Valley High School in Louisville: Friday, Nov. 8 - First Round: 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 4 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 7 p.m., 8:30 p.m..
Saturday, Nov. 9 - Quarterfinals: 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m.; Semifinals: 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 10 - Championship at 2 p.m.
Assumption is the reigning state volleyball champion. The Rockets edged longtime rival Mercy 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 25-18, 15-25, 15-10) in the 2012 state title match.
Allen Central is the reigning 15th Region champion. The Rebels fell to longtime Kentucky high school volleyball powerhouse Greenwood in the opening round of the 2012 state tournament.
Henderson County, Campbell County, Owensboro Catholic, Henry Clay, Russell, Lone Oak, Corbin, Mercy, Southwestern, North Oldham, Central Hardin, Notre Dame and Letcher County Central also competed in last year’s state tourney.
