ASHLAND — Morehead State University, in cooperation with community, veterans services, volunteer and business organizations, will sponsor the Eastern Kentucky Veterans Expo to honor, assist and publicly recognize the men and women who have honorable served and are currently serving our nation.
The event will be held at the Boyd County Middle School, 1226 Summit Road, Summit, Friday, June 14, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
“Our many partners are excited to ‘Serve those who have served.’ Most of the veterans’ job fairs that I’ve seen are held in large, urban areas. And I understand that it is easier to hold these types of events in urban areas where the job market is more robust and the veteran population is dense. Yet urban-centric job fairs are not as helpful for our many veterans in Eastern Kentucky and the tri-state region of Appalachia,” said Max Ammons, Morehead State University’s director of military initiatives.
“Our veterans deserve the support of our local communities, so we completely changed the paradigm. We developed a regional event that offers employment opportunities plus a full range of other resources. And we did it collaboratively with federal, state and local partners. It’s our way of saying ‘thank you,’ to the many men and women of our region who have honorably served in the military.”
The Expo offers access to many veteran and community resources, education and training information, employment opportunities, medical screening, and veterans’ benefits through the Veterans Affairs (VA). Veterans, active military and their families may also attend to enjoy the free lunch, live music and prizes. Veterans and active military also can sign up for a special employment readiness workshop to be held all day June 13 and the morning of June 14. Contact the Expo information line for more details.
Sponsors of the Veterans’ Expo include MSU with the support of the Ashland Alliance, Ashland Community & Technical College, Big Sandy Superstore, Boyd County Schools, Chick-fil-A, Clear Channel Radio, Corporation for National and Community Service, Department of Veterans Affairs, Fannin Toyota, FIVCO Area Development District, Huntington VA Medical Center, Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs, Kentucky National Guard, Kentucky Veterans Program Trust Fund, Kentucky Workforce Development /Office of Employment & Training, Morehead News Group, Morehead State University Foundation, Northeast Community Action Operation Home Front, Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, Pepsi Cola Bottling Company, R&R Tent Rental, Shelter of Hope, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Volunteers of America, and Wal-Mart.
