HINDMAN - The Alice Lloyd College women’s tennis program, under the direction of head coach Mary Turner, has signed Knott County Central High School’s Ashley Cornett to an athletic letter of intent for the 2013-14 season. Turner made the short trip to Hindman on Wednesday, April 17 and returned to Pippa Passes with the fresh signature of the Knott County Central singles star.

“Ashley is not only outstanding on the court, but off the court, as well,” Turner said. “She has excelled academically. As a player, she is very determined and hardworking, which are two key assets to building our tennis program.”

With the loss of seniors Lydia Harris and Rebekah Bevins, Alice Lloyd will have a young team next season in the always-challenging Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC). However, the addition of Cornett will help to bolster the team with the talent it needs to succeed. Cornett was a top performer in high school, claiming the 14th Region singles championship. She and doubles partner Kennedy King also won this year’s 14th Region doubles championship. Cornett advanced to state competition in both singles and doubles competition.

“She is exactly what we want in a tennis player,” Turner added. “I’ve had the chance to watch Ashley grow through the years. She loves the game, and her enthusiasm for competing is just amazing. She has a positive attitude even when she’s playing from behind in a match. I’m very glad and proud to welcome her to our team.”
