PRESTONSBURG — Prestonsburg High School’s graduation was pushed back one day, after a scheduling conflict arose between the ceremony and several seniors competing in a state track meet.

The exercise, which had been set for 7 p.m., Friday, May 17, will now be held at 5 p.m., Saturday, May 18, Principal Jerry Butcher told The Floyd County Times on Monday.

According to Butcher, this is something that the school has had to contend with before, but was able to avoid the conflict because races were held earlier in the day. Butcher said school officials had known of the track meet since early last week, but only learned of their race times on Thursday.

“I didn’t want to move it, but we had to do it to accommodate all of the kids,” Butcher said.

Some parents are angered, though, because invitations have already been sent out and family arrangements have already been made. Amy McCarty said she had family coming in from Michigan, who had fixed their work schedules so that they could attend, but who won’t be able to now.

Butcher said he knew that postponing the ceremony would create a conflict, so once the decision was made to push it back, the school went to a printer and ordered post cards for students who had already sent out their invitations, and inserts for students who had not yet set out their invitations. “I promise you, wed did everything we could,” Butcher said.

Floyd County Supt. Henry Webb said that, while his office left the decision up to the school, he supported the move. Webb said he was unsure if the school could have done anything to have averted the postponement. “Could some proactive action been taken? Possibly. I’m not sure.”

Webb said, in the end, the school was left trying to do right by all of the students.

“Ultimately, we try to do what’s best for the kids.”
