Grand jury to hear case against doctor

PRESTONSBURG — The matter of a Floyd County doctor accused of being in possession of child pornography is now in the hands of a grand jury, following a preliminary hearing in Floyd District Court on Monday.
Dr. Bret A. Dunning, 50, of Dana, was arrested last week and charged with one count of possession of a matter portraying a sex performance by a minor. According to accounts from the police investigation, which were recounted during Monday’s hearing, Dunning was allegedly found to be in possession of several child-exploitation photographs on his computer. The pictures portrayed sexual acts by children between the ages of 4 and 7.
The images were discovered last week, when Kentucky State Police detectives executed a search warrant at Dunning’s residence following an online investigation conducted by Post 9 detectives.
On Monday, the charge against Dunning was remanded to a grand jury. All the conditions of his bond remain the same, save for the addition that he not possess a firearm during the course of the trial.
Dunning both owns and operates Dunning Medical Clinic, which shares a parking lot with a local preschool. The conditions of Dunning’s release prevent him from being within 1,000 feet of a school, day care center or any place where there are underage children. Dunning’s wife, Maleshea Dunning, also a D.O., has a family practice at Pikeville Medical Center.
Dunning is currently out of jail on a $25,000 cash bond.
