Tug Valley Bass Anglers hosts tourney on Dewey Lake
Times Staff Report
PRESTONSBURG - The Tug Valley Bass Anglers held its second tournament of the 2013 season on Dewey Lake Sunday. There was a great turnout with 37 anglers competing in the local fishing tournament.
Dewey Lake was full pool. The Corps brought the lake up to summer elevation the week before the tournament. The water was in good shape with stained conditions on the entire lake and a temperature of 53-56 degrees.
Weather for the tournament was good with 70 degree air temperatures and partly cloudy skies. The wind however was a little rough with sustained winds of 20mph and gusts of 30 to 35.
The fishing for this tournament was pretty tough, there wasn’t many fish up shallow and the wind made it nearly impossible to fish smaller baits deep to get them to bite. The fish were in prespawn mode, they were setting at the mouths of pockets and off the deeper banks leading into creeks in 10 to 15 feet of water just waiting to move in.
The main pattern for this tournament was to fish crankbaits and spinnerbaits around laydowns for the bass that did move up shallow and fish crawfish imitations slowly along the bottom for the deeper bass.
The top finishers were as follows: 1. MO (3 fish), 8.72 lbs.; 2. Gerry Adkins (2 fish), 5.94 lbs.; 3. Shawn Smith (1 fish), 4.39 lbs.; 4. Matthew Chapman (1 fish), 3.17 lbs.; 5. Mitch Salmons (1 fish), 3.16 lbs.; 6. Kevin Runyon (1 fish), 2.38 lbs.; 7. Joe Collins (1 fish), 1.99 lbs.; 8. Austin Case (1 fish), 1.82 lbs.
