Softball: Bears split Friday for 4-2 week

PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville softball team split a doubleheader with St. Marys on Friday, bringing their record for the week to 4-2.

The Bears won the first game 11-0 before falling in the second 9-0.

Pikeville vs. St. Marys: Sisters Kayla and Courtney Morgan each homered in the opener to give the Bears an 11-0 win. Kayla, the winning pitcher, hit a three-run blast in the third, while Courtney ended the game with a grand slam to finish a five-run fifth inning.

Freshman Hollie Hinkle had three singles while driving in two and scoring two. Freshman Heather Maynard singled, scored one and drove in a run as well. Sophomore Kayla Brown had a triple among her two hits and scored a run, while Becki Jo Howard singled and scored twice. Sophomore Sarah Kinney singled and scored.

Kayla Morgan struck out five and allowed five hits in going the distance.

In the second game, only a second-inning single by sophomore Jordyn Hale kept the Bears from going hitless. St. Marys pounded a dozen hits in the 9-0 win.

Bears at Rio Grande: A five-run top of the seventh gave the Bears a 7-6 win in the opener of the Mid-South Conference doubleheader.

Junior Emily Castle was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the win, while the Morgans had two hits and two RBIs each with Courtney Morgan scoring once. Hale had a single, a run scored and an RBI.

Kayla Morgan got the win, allowing 14 hits while going the distance. She struck out four.

In the nightcap, Pikeville scored twice in the top of the seventh of a 6-2 loss. The Bears got five singles in the game, coming from Maynard, Hale, Brown and both Morgans. Courtney Morgan’s hit delivered both Kayla Morgan and Hale.

Courtney Patrick pitched all six innings for the Bears. Only two of the six runs were earned.

Pikeville vs. Asbury: Kinney blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to push UPike past Asbury 10-8 in the opener on Tuesday.

Hinkle had four hits, two RBIs and a run scored in the win, while Kayla Morgan went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Kinney’s blast was her second hit of the day, while Castle doubled, drove in two and scored.

Brown, Howard and sophomore Brittany Adams all had singles.

Morgan went all nine in the circle, striking out nine. Only five of the eight runs she allowed were earned.

Patrick allowed only three runs while throwing a complete game in a 7-0 win in the second game.

The Bears did all their damage in two frames, scoring three in the fourth and four in the sixth. Morgan had two hits, including a two-run double in the fourth. Kinney added a two-run double to cap the sixth. Hinkle added two more hits with an RBI and a run scored. Castle singled and scored twice, Hale singled and scored while Howard and sophomore Sierra Kiser each singled.

Kiser added an RBI.
