PIKEVILLE - The Allen Central Lady Rebels led at the end of each of the first three quarters but couldn’t hold off a late Sheldon Clark charge Saturday evening. Sheldon Clark outscored Allen Central 18-10 in the final quarter to pull out a 57-52 win in the semifinals of the 15th Region Tournament.
Sheldon Clark improved to 21-7 and advanced to meet Shelby Valley in the 15th Region championship game.
Kaitlyn Newsome, a senior guard, led Sheldon Clark with 17 points. Newsome was one of three Sheldon Clark scorers tor each double figures. Kandice Porter pushed in 13 points and Kelsey Dean added 10 for the Lady Cardinals. Porter handed out four assists as well.
Sheldon Clark shot 45.5 percent (20-of-44) from the field. The Lady Cardinals were 16-of-30 from the free throw line.
Sheldon Clark, two seasons removed from winning a 15th Region title, outrebounded Allen Central 33-25.
The Lady Cardinals also fared well defensively, forcing Allen Central to commit 21 turnovers while registering 13 steals and three blocks.
Kelsey Garcia scored eight points, Emily Waller netted seven and Ashley Hatfield chipped in two for the Lady Cardinals.
Allen Central outscored Sheldon Clark 14-11 in the opening quarter and led 28-26 at halftime.
The Lady Rebels remained out in front of Sheldon Clark at the end of the third quarter. Allen Central led 42-39 at the start of the final period.
A turnover following an official’s double-dribble call late in the fourth quarter stopped any momentum Allen Central had going. Sheldon Clark played its best late, outscoring Allen Central 18-10 in the final quarter to claim the win.
Alyssa Moore led Allen Central with a team-high 16 points. Moore also collected five rebounds. Sarah Rife accompanied Moore in double figures, adding 13 points for the Lady Rebels. Rife also dished out four assists and grabbed four rebounds.
Allen Central shot 38.6 percent (17-of-44) from the field. The Lady Rebels were two-of-12 from 3-point range.
Allen Central shot 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the free throw line.
Hannah MacElhose and Brooklyn Martin netted six points apiece for the Lady Rebels. Krista Parsons scored five points, DeShea Elliott netted four and Elizabeth Prater flipped in two for the Allen Central girls’ basketball team.
Parsons pulled down a team-high seven rebounds for the Lady Rebels.
A newly-crowned champion in both the Floyd County Conference and 58th District, Allen Central ended its first season under head coach Derrick Newsome 18-14. Derrick Newsome guided Allen Central to undefeated conference and district records in his debut season.
