Students from one Floyd County school will be traveling to Lexington next month to compete in the Kentucky Speech League state competition.

Supt. Henry Webb announced Thursday that Prestonsburg Elementary students Shelby Blackburn, Katelyn Bingham, Emma Thompson, Emma Justice and Chelsea Reynolds will be competing March 14-16 on the campus of the University of Kentucky.

“The board team and I congratulate Shelby, Katelyn, Emma, Emma and Chelsea for winning regional competition and advancing to the state level and wish them the best of luck,” Webb said. “The team from PES, coached by Joann Conn, competed Saturday, Feb. 16, against middle school students from the region at Knott County Central High School. Students in these competitions give interpretations of pieces of literature, act, debate, etc., having an opportunity to refine these skills. Including Prestonsburg Elementary, 120 schools in the state compete in various categories.”

According to Mrs. Conn, Shelby Blackburn (3rd grade) and Emma Thompson (4th grade) will be competing in the category of Prose. Katelyn Bingham (3rd grade), Chelsea Reynolds (3rd grade) and Emma Justice (5th grade) will be competing in the category of Poetry.
