Martin leads Lady Rebels in district
BETSY LAYNE - With junior guard Sarah Rife out of the Allen Central starting lineup due to an injury, another junior guard stepped up for the Allen Central girls’ basketball team Wednesday night. Junior guard Brooklyn Martin scored a game-high 20 points to lead number one seed Allen Central to a 71-33 win over fifth-seeded South Floyd in the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament at D.W. Howard Fieldhouse.
Martin scored all of her points in the first half. The productive Martin helped Allen Central move in front early, scoring 16 points in the opening quarter.
One night after South Floyd dominated Piarist behind a career-high 38 points from freshman guard Leighann Hall, Allen Central limited all of the Lady Raiders.
Allen Central outscored South Floyd 26-6 in the first quarter. Following the strong first quarter effort, Allen Central took a 48-13 lead into halftime.
With the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s running clock rule in effect, Allen Central pulled away for the win in the second half.
Last year, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control adopted a rule that allows for a running clock in high school basketball games.
Games at all levels now feature a running clock once the margin reaches 35 points in the second half.
Once the margin reaches 35 points and the rule kicks in, the clock will stop only for charged timeouts, stoppages due to injury or blood and free-throw attempts. Once the official signals for the timer to stop the clock, it will start on the last missed free throw or once the ball is touched inbounds.
Allen Central advanced to the 15th Region Tournament for the first time since 2009. The Lady Rebels will meet the winner of a matchup between Prestonsburg (3) and Betsy Layne (2) in the 58th District Tournament title game Friday. Tipoff for the title tilt is set for 6 p.m.
