BETSY LAYNE - Betsy Layne punched its ticket to the regional tournament on Wednesday evening, pulling away to defeat South Floyd 66-45 in the 58th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament at D.W. Howard Fieldhouse.
The number one seed in this year’s 58th District Tournament, Betsy Layne posted its 11th straight win over South Floyd.
Betsy Layne advanced to play the winner of the Prestonsburg-Allen Central game in the 58th District finals.
Junior guard Dylan Meade led Betsy Layne in scoring with a game-high 21 points. Sophomore guard Peyton Case wasn’t too far behind, posting 18 points for the Betsy Layne boys’ basketball team.
The Bobcats shot nearly 50 percent from the field, finishing 24-of-50.
Tournament host Betsy Layne, the district tournament’s number one seed, connected on 13-of-17 shots from the foul line.
Betsy Layne, under the tutelage of legendary head coach Junior Newsome, jumped out to an early lead and maintained an advantage over South Floyd throughout the postseason contest.
The Bobcats closed out the opening period with an 11-0 run. Betsy Layne led 20-7 at the conclusion of the first quarter.
The Bobcats added to their lead in the second quarter. Betsy Layne took a 39-23 lead into halftime.
The Bobcats owned a comfortable 53-29 lead at the start of the fourth quarter.
Martin Martin and Austin Bailey scored 11 apiece for South Floyd in the season-ending loss.
With the win, Betsy Layne improved to 18-9.
South Floyd ended the 2012-13 season 6-23.
