LOUISVILLE — The Floyd County Times’ coverage of last year’s tornado outbreak earned the paper a first-place award during the Kentucky Press Association’s annual convention at the Brown Hotel.
Reporter Jack Latta and Editor Ralph B. Davis shared the top prize for Best Extended and Ongoing Coverage among multiweekly papers, during the KPA’s awards banquet Friday night. The award was for the Times’ coverage of the March 2 tornadoes in Magoffin, Morgan and Johnson counties, as well as the aftermath and rebuilding effort that followed.
The paper also received second-place awards for its front page and its website, as well as a third-place award for Best Business Story.
The Times’ sister newspaper, The Hazard Herald, took home first-place awards for editorial, feature story, investigative story or series, and website, as well as second-place awards for editorial and sports picture, in the Class 2 division for weekly newspapers.
