Raiders fall in Red River Classic’s opening round

STANTON - Host Powell County prevailed over a visiting team from Floyd County in the opening round of its tournament, defeating South Floyd 73-51 on Thursday as the Red River Classic tipped off.

Powell County posted its third straight win, improving to 5-7.

South Floyd dropped its 10th game in the 2012-13 season, slipping to 0-10.

Senior guard Trey Marcum erupted for a game-high 25 points to lead Powell County past South Floyd.

Marcum was one of two Powell County players to reach double figures in the scoring column. Junior forward Brett Goodwin added 12 points for the Pirates.

Powell County added to its lead over South Floyd in each quarter. The Pirates set the tone early, outscoring South Floyd 23-15 in the opening period.

After packing a 32-23 lead into halftime, Powell County used a 24-8 run in the third quarter to add distance between itself and the Raiders.

Austin Bailey and Michael Martin led South Floyd with 12 points apiece.

Hunt Johnson just missed double figures, finishing with nine points for the Raiders. Tyler Daniels tossed in eight points and Dakota Justice chipped in seven for the South Floyd boys’ basketball team.

In other opening round games played in the Red River Classic it was Ryle 64, Lewis County 60; Lee County 68, Bath County 60 and Lawrence County 85, Paris 69.
