HI HAT - The Prestonsburg Elementary School girls’ basketball team finished just short of completing the 2012 season undefeated. Following a runner-up finish to McDowell in the Floyd County K-5 Tournament, Prestonsburg exited its latest season 19-1. The Lady Blackcats captured the Floyd County Conference championship and entered the K-5 tournament as the favorite.

“There was a lot of pressure on the girls coming in as the favorites,” Prestonsburg Coach Doug Hopkins commented. “My hat’s off to McDowell coaches Alan Joe Moore and Scott Shannon on the great job they did.

“It’s hard to be disappointed. We had a great year after only won three games the previous year. My girls worked very hard. We have a lot of good young girls returning next year and are hoping that we can keep this going.”

Prestonsburg had defeated McDowell twice in the regular-season.

“Both teams played extremely hard and it was a battle till the end,” Hopkins noted. “It’s always hard to beat a team three times.”

Assistant coach Paul Burchett joined Hopkins on the Prestonsburg girls’ basketball bench throughout the 2012 season.

“A big thank you goes out to my assistant coach Paul Burchett for his time and help and all the parents who made this a great year,” Hopkins added.
