HI HAT - The McDowell Lady DareDevils saved their best for last Thursday night, defeating Prestonsburg 19-17 in the championship game of the Floyd County K-5 girls’ basketball tournament at South Floyd High School’s Raider Arena.
McDowell, under the guidance of head coach Alan Joe Moore, best Prestonsburg after dropping a pair of games to the Lady Blackcats during the regular-season.
Kennedy Blevins led a balanced McDowell scoring effort with six points. Stevie Brook Stumbo followed with five points for the Lady Devils. Grace Hopkins and Katie Moore also got involved offensively, scoring four points each for McDowell in the title game.
Beth Burchett led Prestonsburg with a game-high 12 points.
McDowell owned a lead over Prestonsburg at the end of each quarter. The Lady Devils blanked Prestonsburg 4-0 in the opening quarter and led 8-6 at halftime. McDowell took a 13-11 lead out of the third quarter.
With the win, McDowell concluded the season 15-2.
Following the loss, Prestonsburg finished the campaign 19-1. Prestonsburg placed first in the Floyd County Conference.
The McDowell B-team compiled an undefeated record during its season.
