PIPPA PASSES - The Alice Lloyd College women’s basketball team fell short in a bid to turn back Brescia University on Saturday as the visiting Bearcats held on to win 91-88.
The contest was a close affair throughout the first half. Brescia, however, shot a staggering 61 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes to take a 48-45 lead into halftime.
The Lady Eagles were down 10 points with five minutes remaining regulation. Refusing to go away quietly, host Alice Lloyd fought and reduced the deficit to just one with under a minute to go. But Brescia was able to brush back the Lady Eagles.
Both teams scored 43 points in the second half.
For Alice Lloyd (7-6, 2-1 KIAC) J.J. Hickson scored a game-high 28 points, finishing six-for-16 from 3-point range.
Ariel Nickell pumped in 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Lady Eagles. Carla Booth, a transfer from Eastern Kentucky University, scored 22 points and dished out five assists.
Jill Jones paced Brescia (6-2, 3-1 KIAC) with 27 points.
Brescia connected on 76.5 percent (26-pf-34) of its shots from the free throw line.
Alice Lloyd shot just 65 percent (28-of-43) from the charity stripe.
From the floor, Brescia shot 48 percent compared to the Lady Eagles’ 42.6 percent.
Alice Lloyd will return to action on Dec. 17 when it visits Pikeville for a game against the Bears at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center. Tip-off for the Alice Lloyd-Pikeville women’s basketball game is set for 4 p.m.
