Ladycats fend off Piarist, even district record

BETSY LAYNE - Paige Watkins scored 16 points and teammate Tamra Jo Tackett added 11 as host Betsy Layne beat 58th District/Floyd County Conference rival Piarist School 63-32 Tuesday night at the Dome.

Chloe Johnson joined Morrow and Tackett in double figures, finishing with 10 points.

Betsy Layne dominated on the glass, outrebounding Piarist 47-28.

The Ladycats led at the end of each quarter. Betsy Layne outscored Piarist 20-11 in the opening period and pushed into halftime ahead 36-23.

The Ladycats added to their lead after intermission, outscoring Piarist 17-3 in the third quarter.

Kelsi Tackett scored six points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the Ladycats. Kayce Tackett also scored six points for Betsy Layne in the triumph.

Emily Kidd, Bailey Recznik and Brandy Morrow added four points each for the Ladycats.

Francesca Brunati also got involved offensively for the Betsy Layne girls. Brunati chipped in two points for the Ladycats.

Piarist was limited offensively, shooting 22.6 percent (seven-of-31) from the field. The Lady Knights, however, managed to connect on six-of-16 3-point field goals attempts.

Piarist was 10-of-24 from the free throw line in the setback.

Kelli Akers led the Lady Knights with 21 points. Akers was the only Piarist scorer to reach double figures. Cathryn Calhoun scored six points and Jessi Hale added three for the Lady Knights.

Shelby Lemaster and Lauren Wright each had one point for Piarist in the loss.
