STANVILLE — A woman and her teenage granddaughter are dead and several more are injured, following a wreck Saturday on U.S. 23.
According to Kentucky State Police, Peggy Sue Case, 53, of Prestonsburg, was driving south in her 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix, around 1 p.m., when she lost control of her vehicle near the Dollar General Store. The car went onto the shoulder, striking the guardrail in front of attorney Eric C. Conn’s office, then veered perpendicularly across the roadway into the far northbound lane, where it was “T-boned” by a 2007 Suzuki sport-utility vehicle, driven by Carl Ray Johnson, of Kite. The vehicles came to a rest in the south entrance to Cardinal Country Store.
“Of course, we don’t know why the vehicle lost control in the first place,” KSP accident reconstructionist Bryan Layne said as he took measurements at the scene Monday. “That’s what I’m going to try to find out.”
Case and her 16-year-old granddaughter, Ashley Marie Case, a junior at Prestonsburg High School, were pronounced dead at the scene by Floyd County Coroner Greg Nelson.
Johnson and two passengers in his vehicle were transported to Pikeville Medical Center for their injuries.
Peggy and Ashley Case will be remembered in a joint funeral ceremony at 1 p.m., Wednesday, at the First Church of God, of Prestonsburg. Peggy Case was the daughter of Ashley Case is the daughter of Heather Case Risner, Jason Risner and Larry Michael Shepherd.
Trooper Jonathan Dixon is investigating the accident. Dixon was assisted at the scene by Trooper David Watkins, Sgt. Chris Hollon and the Betsy Layne Fire Department.
