PIKEVILLE – Her team led as the second overtime was ending. Senior Sally Roberts set out to make sure it stayed that way.
The Pikeville native had two steals, a layup and a pair of free throws in the final eight seconds of the second extra period to help the University of Pikeville to an 84-74 win over U.Va.-Wise Tuesday night in a Mid-South Conference doubleheader.
Roberts, a 5-5 guard, finished with 10 points to go with four rebounds and three steals to help the Bears to a win, their first since Dec. 6, 2011.
Pikeville (1-4, 1-2 in the MSC) led 58-54 late in regulation before layups by senior Chelsea Clusman and sophomore Katie Lester tied the game. A missed three by the Bears sent the game to overtime.
In the first overtime, a layup by freshman Peyton Wright with 49 seconds left tied the game at 66. A missed shot to win for the Bears set the stage for the second extra frame.
The Bears took the lead on a three-point shot by junior Brogan Conley with 4:17 to play put them on top. And while Wise got within one point once – when Lester responded with a layup with 4:34 left – the Bears never lost the lead.
Freshman Peyton Wright led all scorers with 27 points, including six in the second overtime. She also had nine rebounds in the win. Freshman Natalie Tunnell came off the bench for 15, nailing 5-of-9 three-point shots.
Junior Kayla Stamper, who had nine points and four steals, had 13 rebounds off the bench, five more than her previous career high.
Clusman led her team in scoring with 24 and rebounds with 14. Her sister, MaKenzie Clusman, joined her in double figures with 21 markers and paced the team with five assists.
Senior Christian Nyobe, who had six points and four assists, added 13 rebounds as the Cavaliers won the rebounding battle 49-40.
Pikeville has a week off before visiting Alice Lloyd next Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. tip. Wise returns to the court on Saturday when it visits Limestone College. Opening tip is set for 2 p.m.
