WAYLAND — A woman’s mourning was no discouragement to thieves this week, as a home was robbed while the owner attended the wake of her late husband.

Mary Jane McKinney lost everything. First, she had to deal with the untimely death of her husband, William McKinney, only to come home from a wake to find her home broken into and her safe missing.

According to McKinney’s sister, Wanda Vantu, McKinney was at the funeral home Wednesday night for the wake of her late husband William, when thieves entered the couple’s Wayland home and stole a safe.

“That safe had all of their business information, credit cards, money, everything,” said Vantu. “Everything of value was in that safe, and it’s all gone.”

Vantu wants the community to know. She said the McKinneys have been good neighbors and did not deserve to be robbed while mourning the loss of a loved one.

“This woman has lost everything in her life tonight, and it just makes me sick,” Vantu said. “These are good, Christian people, and they have helped a lot of people in this town.”

Vantu says Kentucky State Police investigators were called and came out to the scene to file a report, but she is still hoping someone who may have heard or seen something will come forward.

Vantu added, “People need to know this bad thing happened to a good family.”

Anyone with information about the burglary at the McKinney home can contact the KSP at (606) 433-7711.
