by Times Staff Report
SAGINAW, Mich. – The Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) has released its regular-season schedule for the 2013 season. The 2013 CIFL season will kick off on Friday, Feb. 8.
Ten teams are set to compete for the 2013 CIFL championship, beginning with the kickoff on the weekend after the NFL’s Super Bowl. Each team will play five home and five away games (along with two bye weeks) and the playoffs will kickoff during the first weekend of May. The professional indoor football league includes the Kentucky Drillers, which will play games as part of its third season inside the East Kentucky Expo Center in downtown Pikeville.
The league has approved the expansion of the playoff format from four to six teams (with the top two teams receiving byes). The CIFL Championship will occur on or around Saturday May 18, wrapping up the entire season prior to Memorial Day Weekend.
The season will kick off in memorable fashion on Friday, Feb. 8, beginning with the home opener for the Owensboro Rage. Pregame festivities for the season-opener will include the honoring of the late Eddie Cronin, the former general manager of the Rage. Cronin will be honored with a moment of silence. Each team within the CIFL will follow suit at its first home game in the 2013 season. The Saginaw Sting will begin a quest for a second consecutive CIFL Championship with a ring ceremony commemorating its 2012 undefeated season.
The CIFL has also scheduled two Monday night football contests in 2013. CIFL games are scheduled at home for the Kentucky Drillers on Feb. 18 and the Saginaw Sting on March 18. A full version of the 2013 CIFL schedule is available online atbit.ly/2013ciflschedule.
The Drillers have home games scheduled versus the Owensboro Rage (Feb. 19), Dayton Sharks (March 3), Erie Explosion (March 24), Detroit Thunder (April 6) and Marion Blueracers (April 13).
The CIFL is the longest-running indoor football league in the United States. The Continental Indoor Football League will kick off its unprecedented eighth consecutive season in 2013.
