President Obama was soundly beaten in what could only be described as a historic party shift in Floyd County, as nearly 70 percent of voters cast ballots for Romney.

With all precincts reporting, the tally in Floyd County was that President Barack Obama had garnered not even 30 percent of the vote to Governor Mitt Romney’s 68 percent.

Floyd County, long considered a hotbed of fervent Democrats, has shown up in red the past two presidential elections, voting resoundingly Republican, though Romney’s 68 percent is staggering. John McCain, President Obama’s opponent in 2008, also carried Floyd County. Before McCain broke the barrier, no Republican had carried Floyd County since before Herbert Hoover.

In the state at large, the result was not much different. Romney tallied 60.37 percent of the vote while President Obama had claimed 37.93 percent. Green Party candidates Jill Stein, Libertarian Gary Johnson, and Independent Randall Terry each finished with less than one percent of the vote.

Kentucky lent its 8 electoral votes to Mitt Romney’s cause.

As of press time, no winner had been declared in the presidential race. However, Obama appeared to have Romney on the defensive in the swing states of Florida, Ohio, Virginia and North Carolina. A win in either Florida or Ohio, or in both Virginia and North Carolina, would seal the win for the president.
