PRESTONSBURG - After trailing at the end of each of the first three quarters on Friday night, host Prestonsburg outscored Middlesboro 15-6 in the fourth period to win 36-33 at Josh Francis Field/Blackcat Stadium.
Finishing strong, Prestonsburg outscored Middlesboro 15-6 in the final quarter to secure the win.
Prestonsburg sophomore quarterback Jarredd Jarrell completed 13-of-22 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns in the opening round win. Jarrell overcame two interceptions on his way to the win.
Seniors Bryson Williams and Alex Kidd and freshman Dalton Frasure each had a receiving touchdown for the Blackcats.
Frasure led Prestonsburg in receiving, reeling in four catches for 96 yards. Adam Griffith netted 65 yards on four receptions for the Blackcats.
Frasure also led Prestonsburg on the ground, rushing 11 times for 132 yards and one touchdown.
Senior Grant Anderson rushed seven times for 34 yards and added two catches for the Blackcats.
As it had done on numerous occasions during the regular-season, Prestonsburg fell behind in the opening quarter. And as Prestonsburg had done multiple times over the course of the 10-game regular-season slate, it battled back to defeat an opponent after facing an early two-touchdown deficit.
Middlesboro jumped out in front early. The YellowJackets outscored Prestonsburg 14-0 in the opening quarter and carried the lead into the second
Prestonsburg managed to outscore Middlesboro 14-7 in the second quarter, leaving the Jackets to lead 21-14 at halftime.
Middlesboro managed to remain out in front at the conclusion of the third quarter as it clung to a 27-21 lead.
Aaron Griffith led the Prestonsburg defensive effort with 13 tackles.
Adam Griffith registered an interception for the Blackcats.
Sophomore quarterback Major Edwards led Middlesboro. Edwards completed five-of-10 passes for 84 yards with one interception. The Middlesboro quarterback also rushed for two touchdowns.
Austin Poindexter and Jake Brock hauled in three receptions apiece for the YellowJackets. Poindexter’s three catches netted 86 yards.
Prestonsburg will entertain Danville in the second round of the Class 2A State Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 9. Kickoff for the Prestonsburg-Danville game is set for 7:30 p.m.
