LOUISVILLE - Allen Central’s postseason run ended on Friday as the Rebels fell to 4th Region champion Greenwood in the opening round of the KHSAA State Volleyball Tournament at Valley High School. In the first five-set match in the history of the state tournament, Greenwood edged Allen Central 3-2. After Allen Central jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, Greenwood battled back to beat the Rebels, winning 18-25, 17-25, 28-26, 25-23, 15-8.
Allen Central finished the 2012 season 32-6. The Rebels have claimed two straight 15th Region titles.
In other opening round matches in the state tournament it was Assumption 3, Henderson County 0 (25-4, 25-8, 25-7); Lone Oak 3, Corbin 0 (25-7, 25-10, 25-8); Henry Clay 3, Russell 0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-7); Campbell County 3, Owensboro Catholic 1 (25-11, 22-25, 25-16, 26-24); North Oldham 3, Central Hardin 1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-15); Notre Dame 3, Letcher County Central 0 (25-7, 25-3, 25-9) and Mercy 3, Southwestern 0 (25-15, 25-7, 25-15).
Henry Clay defeated Greenwood 3-1 (25-15, 15-25, 25-22, 25-15) in the second round of the State Volleyball Tournament on Saturday. In the title match, played later on Saturday, Assumption edged Mercy 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 25-18, 15-25, 15-10) to capture its third straight championship.
