UPIKE women finish third, men fifth in St. Catharine tourney

PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville golf teams continued their solid play this fall on Monday and Tuesday when they finished in the top-five in the St. Catharine Fall Invitational.

The UPIKE women finished third while the men were fifth, both placing in the top half of the field of the two-day tournament held at the Par 72, 5812-yard Maywood Country Club in Springfield.

The men were led by freshman Timmy Miller of Paintsville, whose two-day total of 152 placed him tied for fourth in the field of 65 and on the all-tournament team. Miller followed a 75on Monday with 77 Tuesday in the solid performance.

Freshman Will Boyd of Pikeville followed with a 159 to tie for 14th overall. Kelly Porter and Drew Rothenstine, both freshmen, followed with 164 and 168, respectively. Senior Kyle McInerney followed at 178.

Bellarmine won the event with a score of 608, seven strokes ahead of second-place Lindsey Wilson. Campbellsville followed with a final of 627, while Spalding finished at 635.

Pikeville’s 643 was good for fifth in the 11-team field.

The Pikeville women fired a two-day score of 721 to finish third in a six-team field. Lindsey Wilson ran away with the event, finishing at 658. Campbellsville’s 674 was good for second.

Christen Cropper, a freshman from Maysville, paced the Bears with a two-round score of 173. She finished tied for seventh in the 35-player field. Sophomore Hillary Harkins of Nicholasville recorded a 181 to finished tied for 12th overall.

Sophomore Lauren Gregory and freshman Laken McKinney each finished with 184 for the event, while freshman Brittany Brophy came in at 189.

The teams will finish the fall portion of the schedule next Monday and Tuesday in the Union College Bulldog Fall Invitational, which will be held at Wasioto Winds Golf Course in Pineville.
