Music will be a big part of Alice Lloyd College’s Appalachia Day Homecoming, set for Saturday.
PIPPA PASSES — Autumn has settled down again in Appalachia, coloring the leaves and bringing a nip to the air. People celebrate with warm cider and carnival food; music fills the streets of town and vendors show off their talents with handmade crafts.
Administrators at Alice Lloyd College are preparing for yet another Appalachia Day Homecoming, their own day of festivities in which they welcome alumni back to campus, as well as a whole host of visitors.
Everything kicks off at 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 13. The event lasts all day on the College’s campus. This year’s Appalachia Day Homecoming will honor the school’s 95th anniversary and pay tribute to Appalachian culture and heritage with traditional music, mountain crafts, a book signing by writers from the region, and delicious food. Most of the activities will take place between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Alice Lloyd alumni are invited to the annual Alumni Association Meeting, which will be held in the Ralph Edwards Auditorium at 1 p.m. A reception will follow in Cushing Hall. In addition, alumni athletic activities are scheduled throughout the day.
This year, ALC will feature a special program for the event’s younger guests. ALC’s Caudill Players, a student-led theatre troupe, will perform Anne Shelby’s much-beloved “The Adventures of Molly Whuppie.” In addition, they will have fun and games for children of all ages.
The Penny Loafers, an a capella quartet from Berea, give a free concert – open to the public – at 7 p.m. in the Campbell Arts Center.
