MOREHEAD - Morehead State University will recognize two of its football championship teams on Saturday when the Eagles entertain Pioneer Football League foe Jacksonville at 1 p.m.

The 1962 team, which claimed a share of the Ohio Valley Conference championship, will be honored at halftime as part of its 50-year anniversary celebration. The Eagles overcame a last-place finish the year before and last-place preseason ranking to win the university’s first-ever football crown.

The 1962 squad featured four Morehead State Athletic Hall of Famers - Ernie DeCourley, Mike Gottfried, Howard Murphy and Jack Smith. It also included five all-conference selections.

On Saturday at 10:30 a.m., Morehead State will recognize Dr. Earl J. Bentley. The Student-Athlete Learning Lab in the Eagle Center will be named in honor of the former football, women’s soccer and track & field coach. Bentley, who also served as a professor, retired in 1989 after 30 years at MSU.

This weekend’s contest will also recognize the 10-year anniversary of the 2002 team, which finished 9-3 overall and won the PFL’s South Division. Eight Eagles earned Mid-Major All-America honors, nine tallied All-PFL accolades and Matt Ballard was named PFL South Division Coach of the Year.

Tickets to Saturday’s game are $10 for adults, $3 for children 12-and-under, and MSU students are admitted free with a student ID. Parking is $5 per vehicle.

Anyone interested in making a contribution in honor of Dr. Bentley can contact the MSU development office at 1-877-690-4483 or giving@moreheadstate.edu.

The Eagles have four home games left in 2012. After the Jacksonville game, MSU will host Campbell on Oct. 27, Davidson on Nov. 3 and Valparaiso on Nov. 17. All contests are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
