AUXIER — Two people were injured when an all-terrain vehicle was struck by a train Wednesday evening.

Benice Butcher was operating the ATV at 7:44 p.m., when the accident occurred. Sheriff John K Blackburn said Butcher was attempting to cross the tracks in front of the oncoming train.

“We’re thinking she was trying to cross the tracks and got hung up on them,” Blackburn said.

Butcher was still on the ATV when it was hit. She was airlifted to Cabell Huntington Hospital for treatment.

Blackburn said he checked on her condition Thursday morning and learned she was in stable condition and had been transferred to a room at the hospital.

A 12-year-old juvenile was riding on the ATV with Butcher at the time of the accident. The child jumped from the ATV before it was struck and sustained only minor injuries. Blackburn said the child was treated and released from Highlands Regional Medical Center Wednesday night.

Deputy Ralph Frasure is investigating the accident.
