Volleyball: Bears held winless at Georgetown

GEORGETOWN – The University of Pikeville volleyball team went 0-3 in a weekend cluster held at Georgetown College.

The Bears lost to Cumberland (Tenn.) University 3-0 on Friday. On Saturday, they fell to St. Catharine and Georgetown, both by 3-0 finals.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they play another Mid-South Conference contest, this time at Rio Grande at 6 p.m. They host Berea College on Wednesday night at 6.

Bulldogs 3, Bears 0: Pikeville opened the weekend against Mid-South Conference competition falling to Cumberland 25-18, 25-23, 25-16.

Senior Brittany Hodge (Allen Central High School) led the Bears with seven kills, while freshman Chelsea Staples had six kills and a service ace. Junior Stephanie Dounseroux chipped in with five kills and nine assists.

Defensively, Staples was a force at the net with four solo blocks and three block assists.

Patriots 3, Bears 0: St. Catharine College opened Saturday-morning play with a win by scores of 25-13, 25-13, 25-16.

Staples had nine kills to pace the Bears, while Hodge added four. Dounseroux had 16 assists in the loss.

Freshman Haley Johnson had 19 digs for UPIKE, while Dounseroux added 11.

Tigers 3, Bears 0: The Bears completed weekend play when they fell to No. 16 Georgetown 25-9, 25-6, 25-10.

Dounseroux, Hodge and sophomore Taylor Watkins (Betsy Layne High School) had three kills apiece. Dounseroux had eight assists, while sophomore Samantha Ayres had four digs.
