PIKEVILLE -- A Pikeville police officer attempting to pass through an intersection with his lights and sirens active was struck by another driver Thursday evening.

Kentucky State Police received a report of a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of U.S. 23 and U.S. 119. Once on the scene, troopers discovered Pikeville police officer Joseph Slone was traveling north on U.S. 23 when the accident occurred, en route to an emergency.

As Slone attempted to pass through the intersection, his 2006 Ford Crown Victoria police cruiser was struck on the passenger side by a 2001 Ford Ranger, driven by a Kevin Hunt, of Kimper.

Slone and a passenger in his vehicle, Officer Russell Blankenship, were transported to Pikeville Medical Center, as was Hunt. All three were reported to have sustained minor injuries.

The accident remains under investigation by Trooper J.M. Gabbard. Trooper Gabbard was assisted on scene by KSP Captain Curtis O'Bannon, Lt. Darren Stapleton, Sgt. Chris Hollan and Trooper Jason McClellan.
