PRESTONSBURG - Prestonsburg sophomore Jarredd Jarrell and senior Bryson Williams carved their names into the Kentucky high school football record books Friday night in the first of two home games this season versus Pike County Central. Jarrell, a first-year starter at quarterback, completed 18-of-27 passes for 676 yards and nine touchdowns. Jarrell’s aerial effort made him the state’s single-game leader for passing yardage. Williams hauled in eight receptions for 357 receiving yards and five touchdowns, becoming the state’s single-game receiving leader as the Blackcats defeated Pike County Central 83-49 at Josh Francis Field/Blackcat Stadium.
Jarrell’s nine touchdown passes set a new Prestonsburg record and tied the state record.
The Prestonsburg quarterback had passed for over 950 yards in his first four games.
Junior Grant Anderson grabbed five catches for 206 yards and four touchdowns in Prestonsburg’s record-filled victory.
The Blackcats had 850 yards of total offense.
Prestonsburg kicker Jon Stidham was 11-for-11 on extra points, tying for second most in a game in state history.
Prestonsburg led Pike County Central 28-13 at the end of the opening quarter and carried a 49-35 lead into halftime.
Host Prestonsburg (3-2) extended its lead in the third quarter, adding two more touchdowns to lead 63-35 heading into the final period.
The non-district high school football game was a shootout. Pike County Central quarterback Mac Justice completed 26-of-35 passes for 492 yards.
Brad Elkins led Pike Central in receiving. Elkins reeled in six receptions for 189 yards and one touchdown. Wes Pugh pulled in six catches for 136 yards and one touchdown for Pike Central in the setback.
Jarrell broke a newly-established state record. Nelson County senior quarterback Dylan Beasley became the state’s single-game passing leader on Aug. 31 when he completed 40-of-43 passes for 652 yards and eight touchdowns in a game versus Marion County.
Williams became the state’s leading single-game receiver, moving ahead of Patrick West of Franklin-Simpson who had 325 yards receiving in a game against Allen County-Scottsville in 2002.
Prestonsburg will host Pike Central in a regular-season finale on Oct. 26 at Josh Francis Field/Blackcat Stadium.
