PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville women’s soccer team allowed its first goal of the season Saturday night at Covenant (Ga.) College, and it proved costly in a 1-0 loss.
The Katelyn Newsome goal came off a rebound and found the back of the net from close range at the 79:57 mark and stood for the final 10 minutes.
Sophomore keeper Chelsea Schulte, the Mid-South Conference defensive player of the week, turned away six shots on goal in the loss. She has now rejected 18 of the 19 shots on goal against her this season.
Pikeville (2-1) managed four shots on goal in the contest. Senior Kara Henning took two of them, with the others coming from sophomore Eleanor Hollingsworth and freshman Karmen Coster.
Newsome’s goal came on one of her three shots on goal for Scots (2-1-1).
The Bears will return to action Thursday night when they host Ohio Christian University in a 7 p.m. contest at Bob Amos Park.
