MOREHEAD - Bakari Turner, a 2012 National Junior College Athletic Association All-American, has signed a National Letter of Intent at Morehead State. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Turner, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound shooting guard from Plano, Texas, joins the Eagles after two years of junior college in Texas. He spent the 2010-11 season at Blinn College and 2011-12 campaign at Cedar Valley College. He originally signed with Baylor out of high school and was most recently offered by Texas Tech.
“Bakari is a big-time talent, and we’re excited about him joining our program,” Head Coach Sean Woods said. “Bakari had several high-major programs recruiting him, and we’re happy he chose Morehead State in the end. He could certainly be a difference maker for us in the near future.”
Turner was part of a 23-9 and national runner-up squad at Cedar Valley. He averaged 24.4 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.4 steals and 2.2 blocked shots, while connecting on 41 percent from the field, 39 percent from three-point range and 74 percent from the free-throw line.
Turner was part of a 21-10 team at Blinn. He averaged 17.0 points and 2.8 rebounds, while knocking down 43 percent from the floor, 35 percent from long distance and 69 percent from the charity stripe.
“Bakari has the potential to play valuable minutes for us the next two years,” Woods said. “He’s a hard-nosed competitor who is quick with the ball and has a knack for scoring. He can also defend three positions for us. I think he will fit in nicely with the up-tempo style we are going to play.”
MSU will open its upcoming campaign in November.
“We want to be among the Ohio Valley Conference leaders in scoring, field-goal shooting and three-point percentage this season,” Woods added. “Bakari will help us in all of those categories. His ability to score will help get us into a full-court press, where we can put pressure on opponents.”
