Piarist sweeps Prestonsburg

PRESTONSBURG - Piarist notched its third straight win Monday night, blanking 58th District/Floyd County Conference foe Prestonsburg 2-0 at the Prestonsburg Fieldhouse.

The Knights pulled away to beat Piarist 25-17 in the first set and closed the match with a 25-19 triumph in the second game.

With the win, Piarist improved to 3-2.

The match served as a season-opener for Prestonsburg, which is under the guidance of first-year head coach April Newsome.

Returning standouts Blair Johnson and Kelli Akers helped to lead Piarist to the 2-0 win.

Blair delivered five assists, two aces and a pair of digs for the Knights. Akers added three aces, three kills and eight digs for Piarist in the 58th District/Floyd County Conference triumph.

Freshman Tyra Nairn, however, paced Piarist with four aces, five kills and 10 digs.

Marianna Jacobs (six aces), Lakyn Wallace (seven digs) and Katie Goble (three kills) led Piarist to a convincing 2-0 win in the junior varsity match. The young Piarist junior varsity volleyball team’s roster features four seventh-graders and two eighth-graders.
