PRESTONSBURG — Burglars of the Glyn View Plaza Rite Aid over the weekend displayed a striking degree of professionalism in their heist, but did not take into account a surveillance camera at another business.

Police are reviewing surveillance footage in an attempt to find clues that will lead them to the culprits.

Det. Adam Dixon, of Prestonsburg Police, said the video, from nearby Peking Restaurant, is dark, but appears to show two men loading their bounty into a dark Doge or Chrysler minivan.

Dixon said while there have been several instances of pharmacies being broken into over the past few years, this one took things to a whole other level.

“This is one of of the more extravagant burglaries we’ve ever seen,” Dixon said.

The men apparently cut electricity to the building to bypass the alarm system, shortly after midnight, Sunday, then tunneled their way through two holes in the roof. Once inside the building, they went straight for the money safe in the front of the store, as well as a drug safe in the pharmacy at the rear of the store. Even though both safes were bolted to the floor, the burglars were able to rip them out and cart them to their vehicle on dollies, breaking through the rear exit on their way.

“They had specific things they wanted and they went straight after them,” Dixon said.

Beyond the burglary aspect, Dixon said the incident creates new worries for local police, because the crime has introduced a large amount of drugs into the criminal underworld. While he said he is still waiting for an inventory check from Rite Aid to determine exactly how much money and drugs were taken, he said the drug safe was full of Schedule II drugs, such as oxycodone and methadone, and Schedule III drugs, such as Lortab and Lorcet.

“Anytime you’re dealing with a quantity of drugs that substantial, it puts a lot of danger on the streets,” Dixon said.

He could only say that the thieves got away with a “substantial amount” of both money and drugs.
