EASTERN - Allen Central shook a slow start on Tuesday night, defeating visiting East Ridge 3-1 in a season-opener for both of the Kentucky high school volleyball teams.
East Ridge excelled early, edging Allen Central 27-25 in the opening set. Allen Central, under the guidance of veteran head coach Larry Maynard, battled back to win the next three sets, prevailing 25-22, 27-25 and 25-21, respectively.
Ciara Jones had 12 kills on .316 hitting for defending 15th Region champion Allen Central.
Katie Kendrick pounded in nine kills and hit .409 for the Rebels in the win. Kendrick also contributed 11 digs and eight blocks for the winning team.
Setter Courtney Hodge had 34 assists, 11 digs, one block, one block assist and two aces for the Rebels.
Sarah Grindrod, in her first varsity start as part for the Allen Central volleyball, slapped in eight kills and registered three digs.
Laken Tackett turned in four blocks, two block assists, four digs and three kills for the Rebels.
Rachel Moore also aided Allen Central in the win, finishing with eight kills, five aces, 10 digs and one block.
Libero DeShea Elliott dug up 19 in 44 attempts for the Rebels. Elliott also slapped in three service aces and recorded two kills.
Preseason 15th Region favorite Allen Central will return to the court on Tuesday, Aug. 14 when it hosts Perry County Central.
Allen Central ranked first in KVCA 15th Region Top 5: The Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association has released its Top 5 polls for each of the state’s 16 regions. Reigning champion Allen Central occupies the top spot in the preseason 15th Region poll. Three of the poll’s top-5 teams hail from Floyd County. The KVCA Preseason Region 15 Top 5 shapes up as follows: 1. Allen Central, 2. Betsy Layne, 3. East Ridge, 4. South Floyd, T5-Johnson Central, T5-Pikeville.
