EASTERN - Allen Central won the Red Division of its annual preseason invitational tournament/referee clinic on Saturday. The Rebels defeated Pikeville and Johnson Central to win the division.


Other teams in the preseason high school volleyball tournament include Betsy Layne, Belfry, Pike County Central, Perry County Central, Phelps, Paintsville, Piarist, East Ridge and Sheldon Clark.


Allen Central is the defending 15th Region champion. Longtime powerhouse Allen Central is also the reigning 15th Region All “A” Classic champ.


Allen Central was hosting East Ridge on Tuesday night in a season-opener. The Allen Central-East Ridge match ended too late to make this edition. The Kentucky high school volleyball season opened Monday night. Results from Monday night included Lewis County 2, West Carter 0 (25-8, 25-11, 25-16); Morgan County 3, Boyd County 0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-13); Raceland 3, Lawrence County 0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-18) and Whitley County 3, Bell County 0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-18).5-11, 25-18).


Allen Central made history in 2011, becoming the first team in 15th Region history to win a match in the state tournament. The Rebels defeated 13th Region champion Corbin in the opening round of the state tournament. North Oldham eliminated Allen Central from the postseason, defeating the Rebels in the second round.


Allen Central, under the direction of veteran head coach Larry Maynard, concluded the 2011 season 30-11.


The Rebels will host Perry County Central on Tuesday. Aug. 14. Allen Central is scheduled to compete in the Bluegrass Invitational at the Kentucky Basketball Academy Aug. 17-18.
