EASTERN - The Allen Central Central High School volleyball team enjoyed
a very productive summer, playing in the Rowan County Summer Smash before the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s mandatory Dead Period and competing at the Morehead State University Team Camp to prepare for the 2012 season.
In the Summer Smash, a varsity event, Allen Central entered two teams, Team A and Team B. Team A finished with a perfect 6-0 record with wins over host Rowan County, Bath County, Ashland, Raceland, Russell, and Lewis County. Team B wrapped up play with a 4-2 record, dropping matches to Lewis County and Russell. The Allen Central squads finished 10-2 in the all-varsity event.
After the Dead Period, defending 15th Region champion Allen Central went to position camp at MSU. The college made accommodations for the Allen Central squad in the dorms. Allen Central was able to field three teams in the camp since one school did not bring a ‘B’ Team. The Allen Central ‘A’ squad was undefeated in drill play and was placed in a division that included powerhouses Gahanna (Ohio), Merrimount (Ohio), Nelson County, Woodford County and Bethlehem. The little Rebs finished their camp 8-4, dropping two matches to Gahanna and one apiece to Woodford County and Bethlehem.
The Rebel ‘B’ Team and the ‘C’ Team, both make-shift teams, finished second in their respective pools during the drill portion of the camp. It was a great showing for the Allen Central units as they took on varsity teams and some junior varsity squads from some very solid programs, such as Prestonsburg, Nelson County, Fairfield, Phelps and Gahanna. All the second-place teams did battle against each other and the final match of the day for both of these teams was against each other.
“You could see the improvement in the players and the teams with each drill and each competition,” Allen Central Coach Larry Maynard commented. “It was a fantastic experience for both.”
Allen Central players spent an additional day at Morehead to participate in a positions camp that afforded them an opportunity to hone their skills or get expertise in another position.
The Rebels are preparing to host their annual preseason tournament on Aug. 4. Finalization of the tourney pools for the annual Allen Central preseason tournament is underway. Teams from Johnson Central, Piarist, Pikeville, Betsy Layne, Prestonsburg, Phelps, Paintsville, Perry Central, Belfry and East Ridge are committed to play in the preseason event.
