PRESTONSBURG - April Newsome will be pulling double duty during the 2012-13 schoolyear. In addition to coaching the Prestonsburg High School volleyball team, Newsome will guide the PHS girls’ basketball squad. She takes over for veteran basketball head coach Jackie Day Crisp.
Newsome helped lead the Prestonsburg girls’ basketball team as a player and now she’ll have her chance to guide the Lady Blackcats as the program’s head coach.
“I’m excited,” Newsome commented. “We were able to do a little earlier in the summer and we’re looking forward to getting back in the gym.”
Amy Kincheloe and Ashland Gearheart have joined Newsome on the Prestonsburg staff as her assistant coaches.
Prestonsburg competes in the 58th District along with Allen Central, Betsy Layne, South Floyd and the Piarist School.
From now until at least late-September, Newsome will busy coaching the PHS volleyball team. With basketball practice able to begin in mid-October, Newsome will remain on the court, switching only sports. Her coaching obligations will take her through most of the winter.
The Prestonsburg girls’ basketball team concluded the 2011-12 season 12-20. Prestonsburg finished runner-up behind Betsy Layne in the 58th District last season. Shelby Valley eliminated Prestonsburg from the postseason, defeating the Lady Blackcats in the opening round of the 15th Region Tournament.
