A Floyd County native will get a scholarship from Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to attend the University of Kentucky next fall.

Sara Morgan Sexton earned a full college scholarship from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to pursue degrees in civil engineering.

Sexton is a 2011 graduate of Allen Central High School, now enrolled at the University of Kentucky.

Sarah C. Hay, a 2012 graduate of Lawrence County High School, also earned a scholarship and is now a student at Western Kentucky University.

Both women have full-time jobs this summer with Highway District 12. Hay is working in the Paintsville Section engineering office and Sexton is posted to the Prestonsburg Section office.

More than 1,500 exceptional students throughout Kentucky have been recipients of the scholarship, established in 1948. Currently, the award is worth $44,000 for a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.

Students are selected based on high school performance, ACT scores, aptitude in math and science, and an interest in engineering as a career. They are offered the opportunity to work during summer months and guaranteed full-time employment with the Cabinet upon graduation.
