MOREHEAD - Prestonsburg High School graduate John Gilliam will be coaching in his 15th season when the Morehead State University football team kicks off the 2012 campaign next month. Gilliam is a former linebacker for the Eagles.

He is MSU’s defensive coordinator and works particularly with the Eagle linebackers while making the defensive calls. Gilliam is also MSU’s Associate Head Coach.

Earlier in his career, Gilliam accepted the position of head coach at Pikeville College but returned to Morehead State University before coaching a game for the Bears.

Gilliam was a four-year letterman (1983-86) during current Eagle head coach Matt Ballard’s tenure as an assistant coach on the MSU staff. After serving as a student assistant coach for the Eagles in 1987, Gilliam joined Ballard at Union College.

Gilliam spent six seasons under Ballard at Union College. He returned to MSU with Ballard in 1994.

Gilliam earned a bachelor’s degree from MSU in 1987. He added a master’s degree from Union in 1990.

The Eagles ended the 2011 season 3-8 after posting wins over Kentucky Christian, Valparaiso and Butler.

Morehead State will host Southern Virginia in a season-opener on Thursday, Aug. 30.
