PIKEVILLE – A Johnson County native has signed a scholarship with the University of Pikeville.

Leaha Vanhoose, a recent graduate of Paintsville High School, will continue her education while playing basketball at UPIKE.

Vanhoose, a 6-0 guard, averaged 13 points and seven rebounds last season for the Lady Tigers. In addition, she handed out four assists and had three steals per game for Coach Mark Baldwin’s club.

The Lady Tigers were 22-10 a year ago. Only regional champion Magoffin County and Shelby Valley had more victories than Paintsville.

Vanhoose, who was runner-up for the 15th Region player of the year honor and made the Smokey Mountain Classic All-Tournament team, scored her 1,000th-point last season. She was also named to the All-Area team by the Ashland Daily Independent in 2011.
