Highlands Health System hosts blood drive
Special to The Times
PRESTONSBURG — Highlands Health System hosted a blood drive in conjunction with the Kentucky Blood Center. This is Highlands’ second blood drive of the year, with the first being held in January, and two other drives planned for the remainder of the year.
The drive had a terrific turnout, beating January’s drive with 40 pints collected. All the blood collected will go the blood bank for the Kentucky Blood Center, and will be used in various healthcare settings. Donors at this particular blood drive also received an added bonus – a $10 gift card to Wal-Mart, as well as the opportunity to register to win a Toyota Rav4.
Highlands Health System has a long-standing reputation for support of the Kentucky Blood Center. Highlands is currently ranked seventh out of 93 medical centers in the state of Kentucky for meeting their blood drive goals for the past three years.
According to the Kentucky Blood Center, donation provides life-saving support to thousands of Kentuckians each year. One pint of donated blood can help save the lives of up to three people, and over ninety percent of Kentuckians will need blood or blood products at some point in their lives.
