PRESTONSBURG — The city council sees no reason why Prestonsburg’s annual Independence Day fireworks display should be held on any other day than the holiday itself.

During Monday’s council, Mayor Jerry Fannin noted that the holiday falls on a Wednesday this year and asked council members when they would like to schedule the fireworks display.

“The Fourth of July should be celebrated on the Fourth of July,” Councilman Harry Adams, and the others present quickly and unanimously agreed.

The city has often moved functions such as the fireworks display or trick-or-treat a day or two, when they conflict with church and other events. Many local churches have services on Wednesday evenings.

Barring inclement weather, the Prestonsburg fireworks display will take place the evening of July 4, about a half-hour after dark. Skies should be nearly dark between 9 and 9:30 p.m.
