BETSY LAYNE - The Betsy Layne High School football team will make a debut on its new turf field Aug. 24 against county rival South Floyd in the second week of the 2012 season. Betsy Layne will play a total of six home games on the hill during the upcoming campaign.
Betsy Layne concluded the 2011 season 7-4.
“On offense, we lost four starters and on defense, we lost three starters,” Betsy Layne Coach Jon Parsons said. “We return a very young team. We currently have four seniors on the team. We also return another undefeated junior varsity group.”
Quarterback Dylan Hamilton, wide receiver Tony Dirico, tight end Lako Daniels and running back Josh Salisbury are the top players returning for the Betsy Layne offense.
Defensively, Blake Spencer, Houston Hall and Payton Case are among the leaders back for the Bobcats.
“Our biggest strength is that four out of five offensive lineman return,” Parsons commented. “Our biggest worry is that we’re still a relatively young team.”
Betsy Layne will open the 2012 season at Bracken County on Aug. 18. The Bobcats have additional home games scheduled versus Allen Central (Sept. 7), Leslie County (Oct. 5), Hannan, W.Va. (Oct. 12), Shelby Valley (Oct. 19) and Jenkins (26). Other away games will put the Bobcats on the road for matchups with Knott County Central (Sept. 14), Prestonsburg (Sept. 21) and Paintsville (Sept. 28).
“Bright spots for us are the new turf field and six home games this year,” Parsons added.
