MARTIN - Betsy Layne edged Floyd County Conference rival Prestonsburg 1-0 on Tuesday at Allen Central’s home field to win the 58th District softball title.

The Ladycats claimed their second one-run win in the postseason in as many days. Betsy Layne edged South Floyd 6-5 on Monday in the opening round of the district tournament.

Kennedy Bias scored the lone run for Betsy Layne in the seventh inning.

Betsy Layne hurler Brandy Morrow was the winning pitcher.

For Betsy Layne, Eddi Akers, Timera Thacker, Antonia Vance, Bias and Morrow had one hit apiece.

Mercedes Martin had the game-winning RBI for the Ladycats.

“This was what we had been working for all year,” said Betsy Layne Coach Gloria Mullins. “It has been a long year but everything fell into place at the right time. I’m so proud of these girls.”

Betsy Layne won in dramatic fashion, recording the game’s last out on a tagout of a Prestonsburg baserunner in a rundown play between third base and home plate.

Both Betsy Layne (7-21) and Prestonsburg (11-17) advance to next week’s 15th Region Tournament.
